Practical
There is no bad time to visit Lake Guntersville, but each season is very different. Here is what to expect through the year, and who each season suits best.
Spring is the favorite season of many visitors. Days are warm, dogwoods and redbuds bloom in the woods, and the bass fishing is at its best. It is also the busiest season for fishing guides and tournaments, so book early. Spring is the stormiest time of year in north Alabama, so keep an eye on the forecast and know what to do in a tornado warning.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs around 90°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. It is the best time for swimming, tubing and long days on a pontoon boat, and the lake is at its busiest, especially on weekends and around the Fourth of July. Get on the water early, take shade and plenty of water, and get off the lake when you hear thunder.
Fall is warm, drier and much quieter once the schools go back. The water stays warm into September, the fishing picks up as the air cools, and the hardwood forests turn red and gold, usually from late October into November. The views from the bluffs of Lake Guntersville State Park are at their best.
Winters are short and mild, with cool days and cold nights. The lake is quiet, prices are lower, and bald eagles arrive to spend the winter. The state park’s Eagle Awareness weekends, usually in late January and early February, are the highlight of the season. Read our guide to eagle watching.
Whatever the season, Cathedral Caverns stays at around 60°F, so it makes a good plan for a very hot or a rainy day. See where to stay to compare areas.
