Chattanooga day trip from Guntersville: Lookout Mountain and the riverfront

  • 2 min read

Chattanooga sits on the Tennessee River about 90 minutes north-east of Guntersville. The river that fills Lake Guntersville flows right through the city, beneath Lookout Mountain, the long ridge where the city’s most famous sights are found. With an early start, you can see a lot in one day.

Before you go: the time change

Chattanooga is on Eastern Time, an hour ahead of Guntersville. If a tour starts at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga, that is 9 a.m. in Alabama. Allow for this when you book tickets, and when you plan your drive home.

Lookout Mountain

Choose two of the mountain’s three big sights for a relaxed day, or all three for a busy one. Timed tickets are sold online, and they can sell out on summer weekends and holidays.

  • Ruby Falls: walk through the inside of the mountain to an underground waterfall, lit in color at the end of the cave.
  • Rock City: a garden trail through giant rock formations, narrow passages and a swinging bridge, ending at Lover’s Leap, with wide views from the top. It is just over the state line in Georgia.
  • The Incline Railway: one of the steepest passenger railways in the world, climbing the mountain from the St. Elmo neighborhood. It reopened in July 2025 after repairs following a wildfire.

The riverfront

In the afternoon, head downtown to the riverfront. The Tennessee Aquarium follows a river from a mountain stream to the sea, and its freshwater galleries include fish from lakes like Guntersville. Walk across the Walnut Street Bridge, a long pedestrian bridge from 1891, to the shops and cafés of the North Shore, or take a cruise on the Southern Belle riverboat.

A suggested day

  • Early morning: leave Guntersville by 7 a.m. Central Time.
  • Morning: Ruby Falls, then Rock City.
  • Lunch: on Lookout Mountain or in St. Elmo.
  • Afternoon: the Incline Railway or the Tennessee Aquarium.
  • Evening: a walk across the Walnut Street Bridge, dinner downtown, then the drive back.

Tips

  • Book timed tickets: especially for Ruby Falls on weekends and holidays.
  • Wear good shoes: Rock City has steps and narrow passages, and Ruby Falls has a long walk underground.
  • Stay over: if you want to see everything without rushing, spend a night in Chattanooga.

Prefer a shorter day out? Try Huntsville or Cathedral Caverns instead.
